Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 – Ha Giang → Dong Van
Begin your journey in Ha Giang and head north into the increasingly dramatic landscapes of the Ha Giang highlands.
As the road climbs away from the city, the scenery changes into steep mountains, winding passes and valleys dotted with small communities.
Bac Sum Pass
The first major mountain section of the route takes you through Bac Sum Pass.
This is an early introduction to the kind of roads that make Ha Giang famous — winding mountain routes surrounded by highland scenery.
Take in the changing landscape as the journey begins climbing toward Quan Ba.
Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate
Continue toward Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate, one of the classic gateways into the northern Ha Giang mountain region.
The area opens onto broad views of the surrounding limestone mountains and valleys and marks the transition into the spectacular landscapes associated with the Dong Van Karst Plateau.
It is one of the first major panoramic stops of the journey and an ideal introduction to the scale of the Ha Giang mountains.
Tham Ma Pass
Continue deeper into the highlands toward Tham Ma Pass.
The winding mountain road is one of the recognizable sections of the Ha Giang route, surrounded by rocky slopes and remote highland landscapes.
There will be opportunities along the journey to enjoy the scenery and photograph the changing mountain environment.
H’Mong King’s Palace
Visit the historic H’Mong King’s Palace, one of the region’s most interesting cultural landmarks.
Located in the Sa Phin area, the residence offers a glimpse into the history of an influential H’Mong family and a different side of Ha Giang beyond its mountain scenery.
The complex is known for its distinctive wooden architecture and courtyards set among the northern highlands.
Dong Van
Continue to Dong Van, one of the most important highland towns on the Ha Giang Loop.
After a full day through the mountains, check into your accommodation and spend the night in Dong Van.
Overnight: Dong Van
Day 2 – Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Meo Vac → Yen Minh → Ha Giang
After breakfast, leave Dong Van for another spectacular day on the road.
This return route takes you through one of the most famous mountain sections in Vietnam before continuing through Meo Vac and several remote highland areas on the journey back to Ha Giang.
Ma Pi Leng Pass
Travel across Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of the signature experiences of the Ha Giang Loop.
The road cuts through enormous limestone mountains with dramatic views over the deep valleys below.
Ma Pi Leng is widely regarded as one of the most impressive mountain-road sections in northern Vietnam, and it is one of the highlights of this short itinerary.
Depending on visibility and conditions, the surrounding viewpoints reveal the extraordinary terrain of the region and the Nho Que valley far below.
Meo Vac
Continue toward Meo Vac, another important mountain town in the far north.
The route between Dong Van and Meo Vac is one of the most scenic stretches of the journey, combining dramatic passes with remote highland settlements.
Yen Minh
Continue through the mountains toward Yen Minh, passing through more rural scenery and villages on the return route.
The landscape changes throughout the journey, from rocky mountain terrain to greener valleys and cultivated highland areas.
Mau Due, Thai An & Thuan Hoa
The final section passes through Mau Due, Thai An and Thuan Hoa, giving you a final look at the quieter rural landscapes of Ha Giang before returning to the provincial capital.
Arrive back in Ha Giang at the end of your two-day adventure.
