Description
Description
Go beyond the classic Ha Giang Loop on an epic 6-day, 5-night journey through some of the most remote and spectacular landscapes in northern Vietnam.
This extended adventure connects the dramatic mountains of Ha Giang with the border roads of Cao Bang and the Ban Gioc region, combining mountain passes, traditional villages, local homestays, hiking, cultural encounters and some of northern Vietnam’s most memorable scenery.
The journey begins in Ha Giang City and finishes in Cao Bang City, with optional transfer arrangements available from and back to Hanoi or other destinations.
With a maximum group size of 8 guests, this is designed for travelers who want to go much deeper than the standard Ha Giang Loop and experience a broader section of Vietnam’s far north.
Why This Journey Is Different
Most Ha Giang trips remain inside the Ha Giang region.
This itinerary continues east toward Cao Bang, follows remote roads close to the Chinese border and reaches the Ban Gioc region, giving travelers a much larger and more varied northern Vietnam experience.
Ban Gioc Waterfall is one of Vietnam’s most impressive natural landmarks, located on the Quay Son River amid rice fields, bamboo groves and limestone mountains near the Chinese border. The supplier describes the waterfall as approximately 30 meters high and 300 meters wide.

Pre-Departure Information
Travelers arriving from destinations such as Sapa or Ha Long should plan to reach Ha Giang one day before Day 1.
Guests who intend to ride a motorbike should also allow time before departure for safety procedures and riding assessment.
The supplier specifically recommends arriving early enough to complete preparation before joining the group after lunch on Day 1.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 – Hanoi / Ha Giang → Nam Dam
Guests using the operator’s transfer from Hanoi are normally picked up at approximately 6:15–6:45 AM and transferred north to Ha Giang.
After arrival, meet the rest of the group and enjoy lunch before the mountain journey begins.
Rider Preparation
Guests planning to ride themselves are normally met at their Ha Giang hotel at approximately 9:00 AM and taken to the operator’s base.
Before departure, the team provides:
• Safety preparation
• Riding equipment
• Vietnam traffic briefing
• Basic riding practice
• Rider ability assessment
The guide assesses the rider and may recommend an automatic bike, semi-automatic bike or advise against self-riding when necessary for safety.
Lunch & Departure
Lunch is normally served around 12:30 PM, followed by the final tour briefing.
The group then leaves Ha Giang for Nam Dam Village, traveling through scenic valleys and traditional communities.
Lung Khuy Area
Along the way, stop for sightseeing, photography and rest.
The supplier highlights a sunset viewpoint near Lung Khuy Cave before continuing to the overnight accommodation.
Nam Dam Village
Stay overnight in a Dao homestay in Nam Dam Village.
Dinner is served before spending the night in the mountain community.
Day 2 – Nam Dam → Lung Tam → Yen Minh → Dong Van
After breakfast, continue deeper into the Ha Giang mountains.
Lung Tam Traditional Weaving Village
Visit Lung Tam, a village known for high-quality traditional hemp linen.
Guests can watch the textile-making process from beginning to end and may also have the opportunity to try part of the cloth-working process themselves.
Yen Minh
Cross the mountains and reach Yen Minh for lunch before continuing north.
Toward the Chinese Border
Continue along an approximately 50 km section toward the Vietnam–China border, described by the operator as one of the favorite stretches of the entire journey.
H’Mong King’s Palace
Stop at the historic residence commonly known as the H’Mong King’s Palace, learning more about the history and influence of one of the region’s most important H’Mong families.
Extreme North Point
Continue toward Vietnam’s far north.
On clear days, it may be possible to see settlements on the Chinese side of the border.
Dong Van
Reach Dong Van and check into the hotel.
Dinner follows, and adult guests may also be offered local “happy water.”
If the tour reaches Dong Van on a Sunday, the supplier strongly recommends visiting the weekly highland market, an important social and trading event for local mountain communities.
Day 3 – Ma Pi Leng → Tu San → Meo Vac → Bao Lac
After breakfast, continue toward some of the most dramatic scenery of the trip.
Ma Pi Leng Pass
Travel toward Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of Vietnam’s most famous mountain landscapes.
This extended itinerary includes an approximately 7 km hike, giving guests more time to experience the cliffs, valleys and panoramic scenery rather than simply passing through by road.
Tu San Abyss Alley
Continue toward Tu San Abyss Alley, where the itinerary includes a cruise through the canyon area.
Afterward, stop for lunch in Meo Vac.
Journey to Bao Lac
Continue east toward Bao Lac, passing remote villages and forested landscapes.
The supplier notes how the scenery changes dramatically approaching Bao Lac, with broader rice fields and rolling hills replacing some of the harsher rocky landscapes of Ha Giang.
Spend the night in the Bao Lac area.
Day 4 – Bao Lac → Border Roads → Me Pia Pass → Nui Thung
After breakfast, begin the journey toward Cao Bang Province.
This is described by the operator as the “Along the Border Ride” day.
The route follows remote roads running close to the Chinese border, with narrow mountain asphalt, constant curves and dramatic terrain.
Me Pia Pass – The Dragon’s Stairway
Visit Me Pia Pass, one of the most unusual mountain roads of the journey.
The road climbs an extremely steep mountainside through 14 consecutive switchbacks, earning it the nickname “Dragon’s Stairway.”
Lunch is taken in this area while enjoying the mountain scenery.
Nui Thung
Continue toward Nui Thung, an area associated with Ho Chi Minh’s return to Vietnam in 1941 after decades abroad.
The group spends the night at a camping site in this region.
Day 5 – Nui Thung → Ma Phuc Pass → Ban Gioc Region
After breakfast, continue toward the Ban Gioc region.
The route passes through lush valleys and dramatic limestone landscapes.
Ma Phuc Pass
Cross Ma Phuc Pass, which offers panoramic views over the surrounding karst valley.
Homestay & Afternoon
Reach the homestay around lunchtime.
There is time to rest and, depending on the final arrangement and conditions, enjoy a swim before continuing the afternoon journey.
Dinner is later shared with the hosts at the homestay.
Day 6 – Ban Gioc Region → Truc Lam Pagoda → Nguom Ngao Cave → Phuc Sen → Cao Bang
Start the final morning with breakfast and coffee before continuing the journey.
Truc Lam Phat Tich Pagoda
Hike to Truc Lam Phat Tich Pagoda, located in the northern border region of Dam Thuy.
From the hillside temple area, enjoy views toward Ban Gioc Waterfall and the surrounding karst valley.
Nguom Ngao Cave
Continue approximately 5 km to Nguom Ngao Cave.
The cave is known for its limestone formations and extensive stalactites and is one of the best-known natural attractions in the Ban Gioc area.
Phuc Sen Blacksmith Village
On the journey back toward Cao Bang City, stop at a traditional blacksmith workshop in Phuc Sen Village.
The supplier describes an opportunity for guests to experience the local craft and even try making their own knife.
Finish in Cao Bang
Expected arrival in Cao Bang City is around 2:00 PM.
Guests using the operator’s transfer back to Hanoi normally reach central Hanoi around 9:00 PM.
