Ho Chi Minh City Travel Tips: District 1, Food, Markets & Day Trips

Ho Chi Minh City Travel Tips

Ho Chi Minh City is fast, crowded, energetic and packed with food, history, markets and nightlife.

A good first visit combines the central landmarks with local neighborhoods, street food and at least one experience outside the city centre.

Start in the Central Area

Many first-time visitors begin around the traditional District 1 area.

Vietnam Tourism highlights landmarks such as the Central Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral area, Nguyen Hue walking street and Ben Thanh Market as some of the city’s best-known sights.

This area is easy to explore partly on foot.

Visit Ben Thanh Market

Ben Thanh Market is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.

Inside you’ll find food, souvenirs, clothing, coffee and local products. Vietnam Tourism also highlights the market’s food stalls, including bánh mì and bánh xèo.

Even if you are not planning to shop, it is worth visiting for the atmosphere.

Explore Cholon

Do not spend your entire trip in the centre.

Vietnam Tourism recommends exploring Cholon, the city’s historic Chinese quarter, including Binh Tay Market and Thien Hau Pagoda.

It offers a very different atmosphere from central Ho Chi Minh City.

Eat Street Food

Food is one of the best reasons to explore the city.

Vietnam Tourism specifically highlights:

  • bánh mì
  • bánh xèo
  • cơm tấm

and describes Ho Chi Minh City as a destination with an especially diverse food culture.

Do not limit yourself to restaurants inside shopping centres — local street food and small neighborhood restaurants are a major part of the experience.

Visit the War Remnants Museum

The War Remnants Museum is one of the city’s major historical attractions.

Its exhibitions focus on the effects and history of war in Vietnam. Vietnam Tourism describes the museum as a significant and emotionally powerful experience.

Some exhibits can be graphic, so visitors should be prepared for serious subject matter.

Experience Nguyen Hue After Dark

Nguyen Hue walking street becomes especially lively toward evening.

Vietnam Tourism describes the area as one of the city’s main pedestrian zones and notes that it becomes particularly active around sunset.

It is a good place to combine an evening walk with cafés, rooftop bars and views toward the Saigon River.

Consider the Cu Chi Tunnels

The Cu Chi Tunnels are one of the most popular day trips from Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam Tourism describes the tunnel network as extending for more than 250 km, with visitor areas northwest of the city.

Because the site is outside the centre, most visitors join a tour or arrange private transport.

Add the Mekong Delta if You Have Time

The Mekong Delta is another popular excursion from Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam Tourism itineraries commonly combine the city with river journeys, canals, local workshops and regional food experiences in the Delta.

A full-day tour is possible, although staying overnight allows for a slower experience.

Our Quick Recommendation

For a first visit, try to include:

Central landmarks + Ben Thanh Market + street food + Cholon + one museum + an evening around Nguyen Hue.

If you have extra time, add:
Cu Chi Tunnels or the Mekong Delta.

Ho Chi Minh City is best experienced by mixing famous landmarks with ordinary street life, food and neighborhoods beyond the main tourist zone.
