Getting Around Vietnam: Flights, Trains, Buses & Local Transport

Getting around Vietnam is easier than it may first appear, but choosing the right type of transport can make a big difference to your trip.

Vietnam is a long country, and distances between destinations can be much greater than they look on a map. The best option depends on how much time you have, your budget and whether you want to get somewhere quickly or enjoy the journey along the way.

Domestic Flights

Flying is usually the fastest way to travel between major regions of Vietnam.

If your itinerary includes destinations such as Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang or Phu Quoc, a domestic flight can save many hours compared with travelling overland.

Flights are especially useful when combining northern, central and southern Vietnam in one trip.

Tip: Allow enough time for airport transfers and check which terminal your flight uses, especially at larger airports.

Travelling by Train

Vietnam’s railway is one of the most scenic ways to travel through the country.

The main north-south railway connects Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with many destinations along the way, including Hue, Da Nang and Nha Trang.

Train travel is slower than flying, but it can be a great experience if you have enough time.

Different seat and sleeper options are available depending on the route and train.

For longer overnight journeys, a sleeper berth can help you save a hotel night while continuing your trip.

Buses and Sleeper Buses

Buses connect cities, towns and tourist destinations throughout Vietnam.

For routes without convenient flights or trains, buses can be one of the easiest options.

Long-distance sleeper buses are common and are designed for overnight or extended journeys.

Quality varies between operators, so check the departure point, arrival location, reviews and seating configuration before booking.

Limousine Vans

On many popular routes, smaller limousine-style vans provide a comfortable alternative to large buses.

They are especially useful for medium-distance journeys between cities and nearby destinations.

Depending on the operator, pickup may be available from hotels or central meeting points.

Getting Around Vietnamese Cities

For short trips inside cities, you have several options.

Ride-hailing apps such as Grab are widely used in major destinations and can be convenient because you can see the estimated fare and destination inside the app.

Traditional taxis are also easy to find in larger cities.

Public buses can be inexpensive, although routes may be less convenient for first-time visitors.

Walking

Walking is often the best way to explore compact areas such as Hanoi’s Old Quarter, central Hoi An and parts of Ho Chi Minh City.

However, distances can quickly become uncomfortable in Vietnam’s heat and humidity.

A good approach is often to combine walking with short taxi or ride-hailing trips.

Motorbikes

Motorbikes are a major part of everyday life in Vietnam.

Renting one can provide freedom, especially in rural areas and smaller destinations, but it is not the right option for everyone.

Traffic conditions can be very different from what visitors are used to, and driving rules, licence requirements and insurance conditions should always be checked before renting.

Private Drivers

For families, groups or travelers who want more comfort, a private driver can be one of the easiest ways to explore.

Private transport is particularly useful for day trips, airport transfers and itineraries with several stops.

It also gives you more flexibility than travelling according to a fixed bus or train schedule.

Which Transport Should You Choose?

For long distances:
Choose a domestic flight when time is important.

For scenic travel:
Consider the train.

For medium distances:
Buses and limousine vans can be practical.

For city travel:
Walking, taxis and ride-hailing apps are usually easiest.

For flexible day trips:
Consider a private driver.

There is no single best way to travel around Vietnam.

Many visitors combine flights, trains, local transport and private transfers during the same trip.

Choose the option that gives you the best balance between time, comfort and experience.
