Getting Around Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc is much larger than many first-time visitors expect, so transportation matters.
The island’s beaches, attractions, resorts and villages are spread across different areas. Vietnam Tourism lists motorbike rental, local taxis, minibuses, coaches and organized tours among the main ways to explore.
Taxis
Taxis are one of the easiest options for visitors who do not want to drive themselves.
They are useful for:
- airport transfers
- travelling between resorts
- visiting beaches
- evening trips
- families or groups
- attractions farther from your hotel
For short holidays, using taxis or arranging private transfers can be simpler than renting a vehicle.
Motorbikes
Motorbike rental is extremely common on Phu Quoc.
Vietnam Tourism notes that motorcycles can be rented from many hotels and specialist rental businesses. They offer plenty of flexibility for exploring beaches, villages and quieter parts of the island.
If you rent one yourself, make sure you have the appropriate licence and insurance and are comfortable riding on unfamiliar roads.
Airport Transfers
Phu Quoc International Airport is the main entry point for most visitors arriving by air.
As with other Vietnamese airports, passengers should use authorised taxi, bus or licensed transport services when leaving the terminal. Vietnam’s airport guidance specifically advises using permitted transport operators rather than unofficial vehicles.
For families or travelers arriving with luggage, a pre-arranged private transfer can be one of the easiest options.
Getting to the Beaches
The best transport depends on where you are staying.
If your hotel is close to Long Beach, many restaurants and beachfront areas may be easy to reach locally.
For farther beaches such as those in the north or south of the island, a taxi, motorbike or private car is usually more practical.
Phu Quoc’s coastline extends roughly 150 km, so journeys between different parts of the island can be longer than they appear on a map.
Island-Hopping
Boat and speedboat tours are essential for reaching the smaller islands around Phu Quoc.
Most island-hopping tours include transport between stops and may also include:
- snorkeling
- swimming
- lunch
- beach time
- equipment
Vietnam Tourism specifically highlights organized boat trips around the An Thoi Archipelago and islands such as Fingernail Island.
Getting to Hon Thom
Hon Thom is connected to southern Phu Quoc by the famous cable car from the An Thoi area.
Vietnam Tourism describes the cable car as nearly 8 km long and highlights the panoramic views over the An Thoi Archipelago.
You will still need local transport to reach the departure area from your hotel.
Our Quick Recommendation
Short city/resort trips: Taxi
Independent exploring: Motorbike
Airport: Taxi or pre-arranged private transfer
Island trips: Organized boat or speedboat tour
Long full-day itineraries: Private driver or organized tour
For most first-time visitors, taxis + organized tours + one or two private transfers is the simplest combination.
