Getting Around Hoi An: Walking, Bicycles, Grab, Taxis & Transfers

Getting Around Hoi An

Hoi An is one of the easiest destinations in Vietnam to explore without a car. The Ancient Town is compact and pedestrian-friendly, while beaches, countryside villages and nearby attractions are easy to reach by bicycle, taxi, ride-hailing app or private transfer. Vietnam Tourism specifically recommends walking and cycling for exploring the Ancient Town and countryside.

Walking Around the Ancient Town

Walking is the best way to experience Hoi An’s historic centre.

The Ancient Town is filled with narrow streets, heritage buildings, shops, cafés, temples and riverside areas that are easy to explore on foot. Parts of the historic centre operate as pedestrian and non-motorized zones during designated hours, making walking especially pleasant.

Allow yourself time to wander rather than rushing between attractions. Hoi An is a place where small alleys, cafés, markets and riverside views are part of the experience.

Getting Around by Bicycle

Cycling is one of the most enjoyable ways to explore beyond the Ancient Town.

The flat countryside around Hoi An makes it easy to ride toward areas such as Cam Thanh, Cam Chau and Tra Que, where you’ll find rice fields, vegetable farms and quieter village roads. Vietnam Tourism highlights cycling as one of the best ways to experience the countryside around Hoi An.

Many hotels and local rental shops offer bicycles.

Grab, Taxis and Ride-Hailing

For longer trips, taxis and ride-hailing apps are convenient.

They are useful for:

  • travelling between your hotel and the Ancient Town
  • reaching An Bang Beach
  • travelling with luggage
  • getting around during hot or rainy weather
  • evening journeys when you do not want to walk or cycle

Vietnam Tourism confirms that taxis and ride-hailing apps are commonly used for getting around Hoi An.

Hoi An to An Bang Beach

An Bang Beach is less than 10 km from the Ancient Town and is one of the easiest beach trips from Hoi An.

Depending on where you are staying, you can reach the beach by bicycle, taxi, ride-hailing app or private car.

Cycling can be especially enjoyable when the weather is comfortable, while a taxi or Grab is usually easier during the hottest part of the day.

Da Nang Airport to Hoi An

Hoi An does not have its own airport.

The nearest major airport is Da Nang International Airport, approximately a 50-minute drive from Hoi An’s Ancient Town.

Common options include:

  • private airport transfer
  • taxi
  • ride-hailing service
  • hotel-arranged transfer
  • shuttle services

For travelers carrying luggage or arriving late, a pre-arranged transfer is often the simplest option.

Getting to Attractions Outside Hoi An

For destinations farther from the city, such as My Son Sanctuary or other day-trip locations, a private car, organized tour or transfer is usually more comfortable than relying on local transport.

My Son Sanctuary is around 40 km from Hoi An.

Our Quick Recommendation
