Getting Around Hanoi: Walking, Grab, Taxis, Buses & Airport Transfers

Getting Around Hanoi

Hanoi may feel hectic when you first arrive, but many of its most popular areas are relatively easy to explore.

The best approach for most visitors is a combination of walking, ride-hailing, taxis and public transport.

Walking Around the Old Quarter

Walking is one of the best ways to experience central Hanoi.

Vietnam Tourism describes the Old Quarter as an area that can be easily explored on foot, with historic streets, traditional shops, temples, cafés and street-food stalls packed into a relatively compact area.

Hoan Kiem Lake is also ideal for walking, particularly early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

Grab and Ride-Hailing

Ride-hailing apps are one of the easiest ways to travel between areas of Hanoi.

They are especially useful for:

  • short city journeys
  • travelling between attractions
  • evenings
  • hot or rainy weather
  • reaching places outside the Old Quarter

Having a Vietnamese SIM or reliable mobile data makes using ride-hailing apps much easier.

Taxis

Taxis are widely available around hotels, tourist areas, shopping centres and major attractions.

They can be useful for travelers who prefer not to use an app or when travelling with luggage.

For longer journeys, it is worth checking the approximate distance before you leave.

Local Buses

Hanoi has an extensive public bus network.

Buses can be an inexpensive way to travel around the city, although first-time visitors may find Grab or taxis easier for individual sightseeing trips.

Airport buses are also available between Noi Bai International Airport and central Hanoi. Vietnam Tourism specifically lists public bus services among the transport options from the airport.

Noi Bai International Airport

Noi Bai International Airport is approximately 27 km from central Hanoi.

Vietnam Tourism notes that the journey between the airport and the city commonly takes around an hour, depending on traffic.

Common transport options include:

  • taxi
  • ride-hailing
  • airport bus
  • airline shuttle services
  • private transfer

If you are arriving with several bags or after a long flight, a private transfer can be the simplest option.

Cyclos

A cyclo is not usually the fastest form of transport, but it can be a fun way to experience the Old Quarter.

Vietnam Tourism recommends cyclos as a relaxed introduction to the historic streets before exploring more of the neighborhood on foot.

Think of it more as an experience than everyday transport.

Exploring Beyond Central Hanoi

Some attractions are spread farther apart than the compact Old Quarter.

For longer sightseeing days, combining Grab, taxis or a private driver can save significant time.

This is especially useful when visiting several museums, temples or neighborhoods in one day.

Day Trips from Hanoi

Hanoi is also an excellent base for exploring northern Vietnam.

Vietnam Tourism highlights destinations such as Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Ba Vi, Mai Chau and the Perfume Pagoda as possible trips from the capital.

For full-day excursions, organized tours or private transport can be easier than arranging each connection separately.

Our Quick Recommendation

Old Quarter & Hoan Kiem: Walk
Short city journeys: Grab or taxi
Budget travel: Public buses
Airport: Private transfer, taxi, ride-hailing or airport bus
Old Quarter experience: Cyclo
Day trips: Organized tour or private driver

For most first-time visitors, walking + Grab/taxis is the easiest combination.
