Best Time to Visit Hoi An
Hoi An can be visited throughout the year, but the experience changes significantly depending on the season.
For most travelers, February to April is one of the most comfortable periods to visit Hoi An, with warmer weather, plenty of sunshine and generally pleasant conditions for exploring the Ancient Town, countryside and nearby beaches. Vietnam’s official tourism site particularly highlights March as an excellent time to experience Hoi An.
Hoi An Weather at a Glance
February to April
Warm, generally sunny weather makes this an excellent period for walking around the Ancient Town, cycling through the countryside and spending time outdoors.
May to August
Expect hotter temperatures and strong sunshine. This can still be a great time to visit, especially if you want to combine Hoi An with nearby beaches such as An Bang. Midday can be very hot, so early mornings and late afternoons are often more comfortable for sightseeing.
September to November
This is the wetter part of the year. Central Vietnam can experience heavy rain, tropical storms and occasional flooding during this period. It does not mean every day will be rainy, but travelers should allow more flexibility in their plans.
December to January
Conditions are generally cooler, with more clouds and rain than during the dry months. January is among the coolest periods of the year in Hoi An.
When Is the Best Time for the Ancient Town?
Hoi An is especially enjoyable in the late afternoon and evening, when temperatures begin to fall and the lanterns come on.
The Ancient Town also operates pedestrian and non-motorized zones during designated hours, making it particularly pleasant to explore on foot. Current official information lists pedestrian-zone hours extending into the evening throughout the year.
If your trip coincides with the 14th day of the lunar month, you may also experience Hoi An’s well-known lantern festival, when the Ancient Town takes on a particularly atmospheric appearance after dark.
Best Time for the Beach
If An Bang Beach or other coastal activities are part of your plans, the warmer and sunnier months are generally the better choice.
An Bang Beach is less than 10 km from the Ancient Town and is one of the easiest beach escapes from Hoi An. During the hotter months, combining morning sightseeing with an afternoon at the beach can work particularly well.
Our Quick Recommendation
For a first visit, March and April offer an excellent balance of comfortable weather and outdoor sightseeing.
If you visit from May through August, plan around the heat. If you travel during the wetter months from September onward, keep your schedule flexible and check the local weather forecast before outdoor activities.
Whatever the season, Hoi An has a different atmosphere throughout the year — from sunny beach days to lantern-lit evenings and quieter rainy-season streets.
