Best Time to Visit Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City stays warm throughout the year, so there is no truly cold season. The biggest difference is between the drier months and the rainy season. Vietnam Tourism describes the rainy season as generally running from May to November, with slightly cooler conditions in December and January.
For many first-time visitors, December to March is one of the easiest periods for sightseeing because the weather is generally drier and less humid.
December to March
This is usually one of the most comfortable periods for exploring the city.
Expect warm days, lower rainfall and good conditions for:
- walking around the central area
- visiting markets and museums
- food tours
- rooftop bars
- day trips to the Cu Chi Tunnels or Mekong Delta
December and January are typically among the slightly cooler months of the year.
April to May
This is one of the hottest periods.
Vietnam Tourism notes that heatwaves are especially common around April and May, just before and as the rainy season begins.
Sightseeing is still easy, but mornings and late afternoons are usually more comfortable than the middle of the day.
May to November
This is the main rainy season.
Rain often arrives as a strong afternoon or evening shower rather than lasting continuously all day. The city remains active throughout the season, so restaurants, museums, shopping areas and most attractions continue operating normally.
Keep an umbrella or lightweight rain jacket with you and leave a little flexibility in your plans.
Best Time for Walking and Sightseeing
If you plan to spend a lot of time walking around central Ho Chi Minh City, the drier months are usually easier.
Many major attractions are relatively close together, including Ben Thanh Market, Nguyen Hue walking street, the Central Post Office and several museums and historic landmarks. Vietnam Tourism highlights many of these central attractions as easy to combine during a city visit.
What About the Rainy Season?
Do not automatically avoid Ho Chi Minh City during the rainy season.
A tropical shower can be heavy but relatively short, and the city offers plenty of indoor options including cafés, museums, markets, shopping centres and restaurants.
Rain can even make the city feel cooler after a hot day.
Our Quick Recommendation
December to March — easiest overall period for sightseeing.
April to May — hottest months.
May to November — wetter, but still completely possible to travel.
If you are visiting Ho Chi Minh City as part of a larger Vietnam trip, there is rarely a bad reason to include the city — just plan around the heat and rain.
