Best Time to Visit Hanoi: Weather, Seasons & Month-by-Month Guide

Best Time to Visit Hanoi

Hanoi has four noticeably different seasons, making its weather very different from southern Vietnam.

According to Vietnam Tourism, the most comfortable periods for many visitors are generally April to June and September to December. Spring becomes warmer and sunnier, while autumn brings cooler temperatures and clearer skies that are excellent for exploring the city.

September to November

Autumn is one of the most pleasant times to experience Hanoi.

Vietnam Tourism describes this period as generally cool, clear and sunny, with temperatures around 25°C during much of the season.

The weather is especially good for:

  • walking through the Old Quarter
  • exploring Hoan Kiem Lake
  • food tours
  • outdoor cafés
  • historic attractions
  • day trips outside the city

December to March

Winter in Hanoi can be surprisingly cool.

December is often misty and atmospheric, while temperatures from late December through March can sometimes fall to around 10°C.

Bring a jacket and warmer layers, particularly for mornings and evenings.

This cooler weather can still be excellent for sightseeing if you prefer walking without intense heat.

April to June

Spring gradually becomes warmer.

Vietnam Tourism notes that April onward usually brings clearer skies and warmer temperatures, sometimes above 30°C.

April and May can be particularly enjoyable before the hottest and wettest summer weather arrives.

June to August

Summer is the hottest and most humid period.

Vietnam Tourism describes June through August as hot, humid and rainy, with the rainy season in full swing.

Sightseeing is still completely possible, but plan outdoor activities earlier in the morning or later in the day and expect occasional heavy rainfall.

Best Time for Exploring the Old Quarter

Hanoi’s Old Quarter is best explored slowly and largely on foot.

Vietnam Tourism describes its historic streets, traditional shops, street food, cafés and architecture as especially well suited to walking.

Cooler autumn and spring weather makes wandering these streets particularly comfortable.

Our Quick Recommendation

September to November — excellent weather and comfortable sightseeing.
March to May — warmer with generally pleasant conditions.
June to August — hot, humid and rainy.
December to February — cooler and sometimes surprisingly cold.

If you can choose freely, autumn is one of the easiest seasons for a first visit to Hanoi.
